What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding uses a specialized machine to grind the stump down 6 to 12 inches below the surface. The result is a pile of wood chips and a stump that is no longer visible or a tripping hazard. The roots are left in the ground and decompose naturally over 5 to 10 years.

Stump grinding is the right choice when:

• You want a clean yard without a visible stump
• You plan to plant grass, lay sod, or install a garden bed over the area
• You are not planning to build a structure on the spot
• You want the most cost-effective solution

What Is Full Stump Removal?

Full stump removal means extracting the entire stump and root ball from the ground. This is a much more intensive process that requires heavy equipment, leaves a large hole, and costs significantly more than grinding.

Full stump removal makes sense when:

• You are planning to build a structure directly over the area
• The roots are causing problems with your foundation, driveway, or underground utilities
• You are doing a major landscaping overhaul and need a completely clean slate

For most residential situations, grinding is the better option.

What Happens to the Roots After Grinding?

The roots decompose underground and are generally not a problem. A few things to be aware of: some tree species will send up new shoots from the remaining roots (treat with stump killer or cut back as they appear), and you may see mushrooms near the old stump area as the roots break down — this is normal.
